What is Ozone Layer
It is a deep layer in the atmosphere of earth that contains ozone that is naturally occurring molecule contains 3 oxygen atoms. These molecules present in ozone form a gaseous layer in the upper atmosphere of Earth called Stratosphere. The lower region of the stratosphere contains higher concentration of ozone which is called Ozonosphere. It is found 9 to 22 miles (15-35 km) above the earth’s surface. The ozone concentration in the ozone layer is usually under 10 parts per million while the average ozone concentration in the atmosphere is about 0.3 parts per million. It forms a thick layer in the stratosphere, encircling the earth which has a big amount of ozone in it. The ozone layer protects earth and life on earth from ultraviolet radiation which comes from the sun.
Ultraviolet radiation is very harmful and dangerous rays that can exaggerate the risk of deadly disorders like cataracts, skin cancer and damage in the immune system. UV rays also capable of destroying terrestrial plant life, single cell organism and aquatic ecosystems. The ozone layer was discovered by the French physicist Charles Fabry and Henri Buisson in 1913. They also discovered that the ozone layer can absorb almost 97% to 99% of the harmful Ultraviolet radiation that comes from sun and which can produce term harmful effects on human beings, animals and plants.
What is the Color of Ozone (Ozone Layer Restricts)
Ozone is a pale blue gas or colourless, soluble in water and more soluble in inert non-polar solvents such as fluorocarbons or carbon tetrachloride, in which it gives a blue solution. At 161 K, it forms a dark blue liquid. Ozone gas have a slight blue color. It is purple-black in solid form and dark blue in liquid form. The color of ozone comes from the fact that it absorbs all wavelengths of light other than those in blue region.
What is the smell of Ozone
The smell of ozone is described as below:
– Like Chlorine.
– A ‘clean’ smell.
– Like an electric spark.
– Sweet and pungent.
Is Ozone Good or Bad
Ozone layer that is stratospheric ozone is definitely ‘good’ because it protests human beings, plants and animals from ultraviolet radiation that sun emits. The ozone layer that is ground-level ozone is ‘bad’ because it triggers a several health problems, specially for children, the elderly and also people who have any lung disease like asthma.
Why is Ozone Layer Important
A constitutive property of the ozone molecule is its ability to prevent solar radiations of wavelength less than 290 nanometers from surface of earth. It also restricts ultraviolet radiation which is harmful for most living things. Ultraviolet radiation can kill life on earth. Though the absorption of Ultraviolet radiation warms the stratosphere but it is also important for life on planet earth. Scientist who researched about it have expected the disruption of susceptible terrestrial and aquatic ecosystem due to the depletion of ozone layer.
Plants and plankton both acts as food for land and sea animals, can not thrive because of ultraviolet radiation. It could destroy the organic matter. Excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation could lead humans to higher risks of skin cancer and cataracts. It is in research that every 1% decrease on the ozone layer results in a 2% to 5% increase in the occurrence of skin cancer. Reduction of protective ozone layer causes other ill-effects like sunburns, increase in the incidence of cataracts and suppression of the immune system.
What is Ozone Layer Depletion
Ozone layer depletion is the thinning of the ozone layer which is present in the upper atmosphere. It is dangerous for atmosphere and to nature. Ozone layer depletion is the problem for all the living beings including the flora and fauna of this earth and also it is major problem for the atmosphere.
Reason of Ozone Layer Depletion
According to the research by the scientists the reason of ozone layer depletion is activity of human, means all the activities that is done by human beings through which the chemicals are formed and contains bromine or chlorine. These are called ODS (Ozone- Depleting Substance). In 1970s it is in observation by the researchers . The ODS are said to be eco-friendly and they are popular for the last some decades. The ODS float and then reach the stratosphere. Therefore, the formation of bromine and chlorine takes place and these chemical is the reason of depletion of ozone layer. They can break the molecules of ozone layer. One chlorine molecule has a capacity to break thousands of molecules which is present in ozone layer.
Natural Reason of Ozone Layer Depletion
Some natural causes affected the ozone layer which are stratospheric winds and sunspots. However it causes 1% to 2% ozone layer depletion that is nominal contribution so these effects are temporary. Some volcanic eruprtio also contributed to the ozone layer depletion. One is Chichon in 1983 and another one is Mt. Pinatubo in 1991.
Man-made Reason of Ozone Layer Depletion
It is true that human activities are the main reason of the ozone layer depletion. The Ozone layer (Ozone Layer Advantage) depletion occurs due to the excessive use of the man-made chemicals which are chlorine and bromine. It is release from the man-made compounds:
– CCl4 (Carbon tetrachloride)
– CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbons)
– CH3CCl3 (Methyl chloroform)
– Methyl bromide
– H CFCs (Hydro-chlorofluorocarbons)
Solution of Depletion of the Ozone Layer
Less use of pesticides: it helps in growing your farms and plants but it is harmful for the ozone layer and contributed to depletion of the ozone layer.
Less use of Fuel: we can reduce the depletion of ozone layer by reducing the usage of petroleum and fuels used in vehicles.
Limited use of harmful chemicals for cleaning: the chemicals we used for cleaning products causes the depletion of the ozone layer.
Ozone Layer Restricts (Ozone Layer Advantage)
The ozone layer restricts harmful and dangerous Ultraviolet radiation from passing through the atmosphere of earth. These radiation causes sunburn, cataracts, skin cancer and permanent blindness. Which later projected to increase as a result of thinning ozone and well as harming animals, plants and human beings.
What is Ultraviolet Radiation
UV radiation is a form of electromagnetic radiation that comes from the sun and man-made sources like welding, torches and tanning beds.
